Maamawi: Together Through The Fire
O.Dela Arts is thrilled to announce our partnership with Pepper’s Ghost Collective on the creation of Maamawi: Together Through The Fire, a new dance creation in development through 2022-2023. Set 200 years into the future, we are invited to experience the possibility of what could happen if humankind awakened from the aftermath of many great tragedies with renewed reverence for the traditional teachings and remembered the ones who set in motion the technology to witness the world from the heart's perspective.
Dance artists Sophie Dow and Daisy Thompson started choreographic development with co-creators Olivia C. Davies and Athomas Goldberg's VR team in the Shocap Studio this April. The creative team also includes Canadian composer Michael Red, Coast Salish Sto:lo artist Raven John and Anishinaabe artist, Joshua Mangeshig Pawis-Steckley along with Anishinaabe mentor Gloria May Eshkibok. We will be sharing a 30min excerpt of our live performance and VR experience this summer in Vancouver and Calgary.

“it's a gift and an honour to be involved in this ambitious and ground-shifting project. my part of the contributions for the work-in-progress being shown is roughly 45 minutes of original audio. a few already released tracks, a pile of unreleased content, and a pile of content made exclusively for this project. all woven together and mixed to integrate and raise up and illuminate and enhance all the other elements.”

this was created as a studio exercise while re-building my analog set up in my studio for dubwise ('rhythym and sound' related) productions, in the fall of 2020. i made a series of recordings of very improvised / guided / instinctual recordings, while calibrating this set-up (to be ready to create in that way, right away, if the inspiration or a project landed). the bass is played live on a real 'kee bass' unit (that happened to be in the trash at the studio when i first moved in. ..talk about divine). this track has very little edits and is true to form of how the mixer and fx and set-up was played, how instinct was followed, and how guidance interacted.
very little post-treatment was done to the recording off the board too (also, talk about how & why analog is better in many ways and captures certain things). so this track is technically un-mastered. i just couldn't touch it. it didn't want to be touched. ..maybe i'll get around to seeing about a pro touching it at some point.
'discovery dub (raw loop)' was created in ableton, then looped and fed into the analog set-up - resulting in the full featured "version".
best and brightest to you. shine a light. reveal the shadows. love over everything.

four versions, created with knowing nods to tradition
- kept raw & immediate, with little pre-emptive thought, and no backwards movements or second-guessing. reacting on instinct and first inspirations. "live" or the spirit of "live".
- no new sounds. only source sounds from the original tracks
- maintaining the original structure of each track in most cases. and when not the case - breaking that structure boldly, but locking to the first new structure mapped out.
- heavy on the hypnotics, delays and reverbs
- heavy-handed on the subtraction. many principle elements of the original work were fully removed immediately, to force a deeper exploration and revealing of what's underneath and beside.
- making sure to actually experiment and come with new ideas and methods. and when using established methods and sounds, doing so respectfully and knowingly.
deepest respect the original dub innovators, and to all who push the sound. thank you to Mahmood, and acknowledgement to the music and players which inspired him. these dubs would not exist with out the originals they abstract from.
mixed, produced and (roughly) mastered by Michael Red

first release of 2022 is Mount Dilaudid. co-produced, co-written and mixed for Mahmood Schricker (with the exception of the last track). Mahmood's vision was the music of Iran (an homage to prominent figures Parisa, Delkash and Zolfonoon) meets the dub side of dub techno. mastered by Scape Mastering.

souns track 'second story' leads the latest compilation from subtempo records, celebrating 5 years for the label. typeface designed by morgane vantorre and all proceeds go to grey area.
after many months of filtering through the srchives - a good couple handful of older mixs from various eras have been posted to the soundcloud. some are re-posts that were missing for a few years after a somewhat accidental soundcloud purge, and some are never=heard-before mixs from the vaults.
this was in partial preperation for some brand new mixs to be shared. one of which has already gone up: true self mix

in bracken's words: "whenever I use hands I think of the creative and healing qualities they can have in our day to day…whether they are used in making music, gathering, or used expressively. In many of our dances hands are a key physical tool to tell the story or show transformation."

Things have been more publicly quiet, compared to recent years, as more behind-the-scenes work of composing for screen has been developing and getting more prioritized focus.
So far in 2020: music for a Patagonia commercial has been completed, 10 pieces for Destination BC (videos and commercials) have been created, music in The New Coorporation, and a small handful of songs have been confirmed for a numbered of yet-to-be announced short and feature length films, and relationships with high-calibre budding and establised filmmakers continue to be cultivated.

some live DJ streams have started to happen via TWICTH a small handful have happened so far, more will be announcing via the twitch page (in the about section) and via facebook. archives remain up for 2 weeks on twitch and also get posted to soundcloud. still keeping it intentionally hyper-casual at this point, to give space to feel out what feels most natural and what's actaully needed (in the now over-saturated world of live streams). vasho pekar joins with live visual experimentation and manipulation. the music is presently remaining in the 'slowtempo' sphere and the mic is active.
After of year of floating hiatus, the main studio creative workspace has landed back in the heart of east vancouver, after over 8 years of being in roberts creek on the sunshine coast. more connection to community, more space, and finally room for a proper piano and isolation booth for recording. initate.
There is grander news about this space as well, that will eventually be revealed. The much larger main area is shaping to be hq and the main launch pad for all future things LOW INDIGO. stay tuned..
Is it still a kingdom amidst a wild decline in life? Director: Jason Mannings Director of Photography: Jason Mannings Production Company: Alt BC Edit/Color/Sound: Jason Mannings Music: Souns (Michael Red) Thanks: Tetrahedron Outdoor Club + Kodak + ISLA Records Something of a mood-sketch, shot casually during an overnight hike in a fave sub-alpine zone on the coast of British Columbia. Hiked in right after a lovely little music festival in the woods. I brought just over two half cartridges of film, which gave me about 3-min that I could roll for — Kodak 500T & Tri-X. Wish I'd let the shots breathe longer, but alas, was hella rationing those seconds. Perhaps next time I'll bring more film. ... I once watched a raven, Perched on a bluff, Unzip my knapsack, Remove my lunch box, And fly away. Congratulations, madam. I always marvel at those dark feathered pairs, Reigning high over their respective enclaves, Be they flapping in the present, Or soaring thru the arcane. A hot mess of ancients forests, so recently upturned, What if someone typed, Replace all [woodlands] with [timberlands]. Is it still a kingdom, I wonder, amidst a wild decline in life? Let us dream of somewhere without many of us, Fit for a visit, sometimes, to search or recall. A place with tools to do so much with so few, And yet the wisdom to all but set them aside. Nature knows life as moments. Brief is a sunrise. A flicker. A ripple. A gust. If earthly matters do and then die, Should we all not perhaps keep that in mind? ... https://www.jasonmannings.com/ https://www.instagram.com/jasonmannings/ http://www.michael-red.com/ https://isla.bandcamp.com/album/souns-re
